J-2 reservoirs move called too costly
“Moving the J-2 regulating reservoirs from the south side of the Platte River between Overton and Lexington onto Jeffrey Island could boost project costs by 250 percent and result in less flexible operations.
That will be the conclusion in a report from a “screening level” study done by RJH Consultants Inc. of Englewood, Colo., company President Robert J. Huzjak said Monday at the Central Nebraska Public Power and Irrigation District board meeting.
Holdrege-based CNPPID will own and operate the project, which is estimated to cost $75 million if built at the preferred site.
The plan is to transport water via Central’s Phelps Canal into two shallow reservoirs where it can be held and released when needed to meet Platte River target flows for threatened and endangered species.”
