Toms River to use eminent domain for beach dunes
“Township Administrator Paul J. Shives said senior municipal officials met Friday and authorized the appraiser to draft reports on the value of each land parcel whose owners have not signed easements. No deadline has been made official, although Councilwoman Maria Maruca cited July 31 in public remarks at a Township Council meeting Tuesday night. Maruca represents Ward 1, which includes Toms River’s portion of Ocean County’s northern barrier island.
The total number of easements needed, based on the current “draft” project map is 40. As of Friday, the township had acquired 16, leaving 24 holdouts, Shives said. The township’s two barrier island sections — Ortley Beach and Dover Beaches North — are separated by Lavallette.”
