More details in Greensboro’s sale of Bessemer center
“The Greensboro City Council on Tuesday agreed to sell a rundown shopping center on Phillips Avenue to two local investors represented by former Guilford County Commissioner Melvin “Skip” Alston.
The council’s 5-4 vote revealed a sharp split in the northeast Greensboro neighborhoods around the former Bessemer Shopping Center. It cast doubt, too, on the future of a proposed grocery co-operatative.
“This (project) makes the best sense for everyone involved,” said Councilman Jim Kee, the leading council backer for the Alston group’s plan. “I am looking for a win-win solution for everyone involved. I believe this is it.””
