Shelby County school officials say no eminent domain in Montevallo
“A Shelby County Board of Education official told dozens of concerned citizens today that letters threatening eminent domain action on properties around Montevallo Middle School should not have been mailed to landowners.
“That letter that went out to four homes, I believe, should not have been sent,” Deputy Superintendent of Administration Tom Ferguson said at a meeting at the middle school on a plan to improve streets and parking around the institution.
Although the letters sent out in the last week or so indicated possible forcible action on the homeowners to accommodate the improvements, Ferguson said the district will not pursue the legal remedy on the matter.
“That’s off the table. That’s not going to happen,” he said.
Concerns erupted following a meeting with City of Montevallo officials on Feb. 18 to discuss plans for improving roads and other infrastructure in the community around the middle school using a grant.”
