OUR OPINION: City should foreclose on eminent domain idea
“It’s a good sign that Brockton leaders who don’t like the idea of living in the foreclosure capital of the state are trying to solve the problem, but the newest idea afloat is a step in the wrong direction.
The City Council/Finance Committee met with more than 50 people Monday to discuss using eminent domain to take properties from national banks and let smaller, local banks service the mortgages. This would allow the homeowners to possibly avoid foreclosure, stay in their homes and have lower monthly payments.
But what right does the government have to take property legitimately acquired by a bank? It’s not as if it will be used for a park or highway or some other civic use – which is the purpose of eminent domain.”
