Council considering eminent domain taking of Wyman-Gordon site
“The phones are being worked furiously as a move circulates among councilors considering the possible taking of the 14-acre Wyman-Gordon property near Kelley Square by eminent domain. The taking would be done through the Worcester Redevelopment Authority (WRA). Multiple reliable sources within City Hall have confirmed to Worcester Mag that the council is considering the action as a way to protect the city’s best interests against a proposed slot casino at the site. One source called it a “chess match” to try and ensure a four-star hotel for Worcester in City Square.
“The council is looking out on behalf of the citizens of Worcester to make sure the best use of that property and potentially other properties in the city is at the bargaining table,” a reliable source says. “People have to understand we’re going to protect their interests.”
