Pooler to hold hearing on use of eminent domain
“The city of Pooler is moving ahead with the process of using eminent domain to remove a local business from the site of the city’s future municipal complex on U.S. 80.
Pooler officials have scheduled a hearing for 6 p.m. Jan. 5 on the proposed use of eminent domain at the Whiteway Laundry, 211 W. U.S. 80. The hearing comes a year after the city purchased the disputed property and took up negotiations with its new tenant, Whiteway owner Melissa Hall.
According to emails submitted to the Chatham County State Court by Pooler City Attorney Steve Scheer, Hall had been in correspondence with City Manager Robbie Byrd about relocating her business as early as Jan. 6.
But these negotiations broke down during the months that followed, and the city in May filed a notice of dispossessory — eviction — with Chatham County Magistrate Court. The case was then moved to State Court.”
