Success of pipeline may mean much to Oregon
“Two meetings are coming up that will give the public a chance to present its views on a nearly $2 billion pipeline that would cross Klamath County, if approved. If you have something to say, this is the time.
The project would link the Ruby pipeline, which stubs off in Malin, to the Jordan Cove Liquified Natural Gas terminal being proposed for construction near Coos Bay. It would be a $7.5 billion package.
In Klamath County, it could mean about 200 temporary jobs during two construction seasons — and, probably more importantly, a significant increase in the local property taxes that support such things as schools and law enforcement. A 2012 report prepared by ECONorthwest for the Pacific Connector Pipeline’s builders estimated the Klamath County increase in property tax revenue would be $2.6 million annually.
It also said Coos, Douglas and Jackson counties would get estimated annual revenue increase ranging from $2.4 million to $3 million.
In a part of Oregon still struggling to pull out of the recession, that’s a major economic surge.”
