County pursues eminent domain for bridge project
“The Leavenworth County Commission has decided to pursue eminent domain to obtain easements for a bridge replacement project on High Prairie Road.
The vote came during a meeting Thursday.
County officials are seeking easements from the owners of two properties to replace a bridge on High Prairie Road between 179th and 187th streets.
Public Works Director Mike Spickelmier said the bridge, which was built in 1900 and rehabilitated in 1970, spans across a tributary to Stranger Creek.
He said the bridge’s condition is rated as “poor” under federal guidelines.
The county has been awarded up to $325,000 in federal funds for the project. The money was awarded through the Mid-America Regional Council.
