“James Anderson’s farmland is a family heirloom — and he says now part of it is being taken from them.
“It was given to our family like a plantation from the King of England. That’s how far back it goes,” Anderson told WYFF News4’s Mike McCormick. “We’re the last operating family-owned dairy farm in Spartanburg County.”
The dairy farm is in Moore on Anderson Mill Road, which is now under construction.
Orange barrels line the part of the road near Old Anderson Mill Road that’s now the center of a project that will replace a 37-year-old bridge over the North Tyger River. A South Carolina Department of Transportation spokesman said the project will improve drainage and safety.
“It’s hard for me to ride down this road and see these barrels down here. I mean, this is my home,” said Anderson.
Anderson said he was forced to give up 6.6 acres of his dairy farm to the SCDOT because of eminent domain.
“Some of my neighbors, I know for a fact, got over $27,000 an acre, and when it comes to us, we’re getting about $5,000 an acre,” said Anderson. “I should be compensated just like all my neighbors are, which is not happening.””
