Officials target Apex property for ‘micro-zone’ development
“City officials say the landmark downtown Apex property is a main target of proposed legislation that would create “micro” economic development zones here.
Members of Mayor Donald Grebien’s administration, long frustrated by a lack of redevelopment activity at Apex, called a meeting with Gov. Lincoln Chafee, the Rhode Island Commerce Corp. and Apex owner Andrew Gates last week to explain to Gates what pending micro-zone legislation is intended to do for him and others.
Tony Pires, director of administration for Grebien, said the micro-zone stimulus bill allows for a community to include 500,000 square feet of commercial space that is more than 50 percent unoccupied, and Apex would take up about 100,000 square feet of that.”
