Terms Of Eminent Domain Claim Unfair
“The town of Bloomfield is attempting to claim seven acres of land previously owned by Harry Sawyer through eminent domain [May 26, Connecticut, “Town’s Eminent Domain Push Stalled”].
A primary legal requirement for such a claim is fair compensation to the landowner. Bloomfield is under the impression that an offer of $41,000 would be adequate compensation to Mr. Sawyer, who paid $99,000 for the property. A quick check of real estate listings produced the following results: 4.2 acres on Dwight Street are being offered for $80,000. 0.37 acres on Privilege Road are being offered for $45,000. 4.08 acres on Hoskins Road are being offered for $99,000 and another 1.23 acres on the same road are offered for $75,000. It is preposterous that Bloomfield town officials consider $41,000 fair compensation. “
