Legislator Objects To Eminent Domain Provision In Trail Bill
“State Rep. Melissa Ziobron is objecting to proposed changes in a bill she has sponsored to protect the Air Line hiking trail, saying she doesn’t approve of a provision that would allow the state to acquire privately owned stretches along the trail using eminent domain.
Ziobron, R-East Haddam, a member of the state legislature’s Environment Committee, testified before her colleagues Friday, urging them to remove language in the bill authorizing the state Department of Environmental Protection to seize privately owned sections of the 40-mile trail under certain conditions.
The language specifies that land to be taken by eminent domain could be no wider than 100 feet, or the width of the original right-of-way.”
