Save Mount Manresa through eminent domain
“I have been following the greed of the Society of Jesus’ sale of Mount Manresa and their refusal to accept any comprise in the Staten Island Advance. They have enjoyed a tax exempt status for 102 years; I and others have paid my taxes faithfully every quarter.
Did anyone think of the property transfer tax they have to pay upon their selling of the property? I believe it is about 3 percent of the sale price, or approximately $465,000.
What about everything they have bought over the years tax-free? Do they pay water and sewer charges? All the while asking for money, while probably a lot of volunteers did work there. Did they charge for their retreats, etc.? As a tax-paying resident of NYC, I demand that the city collect all back taxes they should have paid over the years.”
