Big Island residents push for beach access through trail on private property
“Residents on the Big Island are pushing for 24-hour access to a popular beach that can only be reached by crossing a private property.
The beach is next to a former sugar mill property that was purchased by two part-time residents. The new owners cut a switchback trail to the beach and built a fence with a gate, posting limited access hours and a list of rules for those who use the trail. The owners didn’t attend the meeting.
The county has appraised the path at $28,500, and some residents hope the county can use eminent domain rules if necessary to acquire the trail.”
