Herzog balks at bridge land deal
“The City Council will decide Monday whether to acquire, through eminent domain, 1.8 acres of property from Herzog Contracting Corp. for a capital improvement project.
City staff say the easement is needed to accommodate the new Garfield Avenue Bridge. But a representative from Herzog said in a public meeting last week that the city would take away viable commercial land.
The 100-year-old structure is located west of 22nd Street and connects the Southwest Parkway over Garfield Avenue and Whitehead Creek. Funding for the $2 million project comes from the Capital Improvement Program half-cent sales tax, which passed in 2008.”
