Malden officials want old hospital building gone

“Vacant since 2001, the old Malden Hospital has been dubbed a blight on the city’s West End — and some city officials are pushing for demolition of the structure, to make the parcel more marketable.

The issue was raised before the Malden City Council on Sept. 3 by Councilor Craig Spadafora, who proposed a resolution that the city considers taking the property by eminent domain.
Speaking afterward, Spadafora said the motion was intended to spark discussion with Hallmark Health, saying the old hospital is a “vacant eyesore” and “incubator for trouble” that needs to addressed.

“I’m not asking them to sell the property,” said Spadafora, in a follow-up interview. “I’m asking them to take that building down and make it a safer place or we’ll take it and do it for them.””
