City Council: Zone change approved for land next to Melgaard
” The zoning change, adopted on second reading by an 8 to 1 vote, gives the entire property an R-2 zone and restricts the density of development on the land. R-2 is a medium-density residential district. The Lamont Companies plans to build three two-story apartment buildings on the property.
Sixteen people interested in the issue attended Monday’s meeting. One of those people, Jeffrey Hayes, spoke. He read aloud an email that he wrote to council members, suggesting that the city acquire the Lamont property through eminent domain and turn it into parking. Hayes, who grew up on Marshall Road, said there is a great need for parking because of events that take place in the park. Tonight’s National Night Out, he said, is a good example of an event that draws a big crowd to Melgaard. Hayes also read aloud the response he received from Mayor Mike Levsen.”
