BASD won’t buy homes near Nitschmann Middle School

“Bethlehem Area School District appears to be backing away from a proposal to buy homes along Union Boulevard to make room to build a Nitschmann Middle School.

The school board took no votes at Monday’s committee meeting but school directors indicated no support for taking the homes by eminent domain. Superintendent Joseph Roy has said the homeowners have no interest in selling and it could jeopardize construction if there were a long legal fight over eminent domain.

School Director Bill Burkhardt had earlier proposed they consider buying homes to enhance the campus. On Monday night, School Directors Burkhardt, Sudantha Vidanage, Basilio Bonilla Jr., Aurea Ortiz and Eugene McKeon said they would be interested in buying the properties, but only if the homeowners were willing to sell.”
