Nashua’s Gate City Tire Co. speaks out against Broad Street Parkway eminent domain process, says they have nowhere to go
“The city and state did what they said they were going to do 2½ years ago. They acquired Gate City Tire Co. at 73 Broad St., and the adjoining residence at 75 Broad St., through eminent domain for a price of $335,000. Since receiving their notice of sale of Feb. 27, Parslow and her husband have known the clock is ticking. They have to find a new place to relocate their business and get out.
Harriette Parslow, 72, said they’d leave “happily,” if only they could. The couple, who now lives in Milford, said they’ve been looking for a new place to set up shop since winter but there’s nothing available in Nashua that fits their needs. They’ve also lost a second income since the state seized the small home at 75 Broad St. which they used to rent to tenants.
“I don’t understand why they would be treating my husband the way they’re treating him,” Harriette Parslow said. “I understand the state called him several weeks ago and said, ‘You can put all of your stuff in storage and go take a six-month vacation, and when you get back, maybe they’ll be something else.’ … By then, we’d have lost our customer base. You cannot do that.”
Representatives from the New Hampshire Department of Transportation have been acquiring properties on behalf of the city of Nashua to clear the path of the Broad Street Parkway for decades. As the design for the parkway has changed, the state has accumulated some properties taken through eminent domain that are now considered surplus and will be sold.”
