City to seize crumbling downtown building
“The city will take over a derelict downtown building that could fall down before the city can fix it up.
The City Council voted 7-2 early Wednesday to begin eminent domain proceedings on the Cascade Saloon at 408-410 S. Elm St. Council members T. Dianne Bellamy-Small and Tony Wilkins voted no.
The city hopes to preserve the state historic landmark, a former saloon, pool hall and furniture store that opened in 1896. But the building has been vacant for at least 30 years, and engineers say part of the roof and the second floor have collapsed.”
