Property purchase could be a problem
“Stroudsburg’s mayor says the county’s purchase of 701 Main St. through eminent domain will take a bite out of the borough and school district’s budgets.
The borough stands to lose about $12,120 a year in taxes by removing the privately owned and commercially leased building from the tax rolls, according to Mayor Charlie Baughman.
“I recognize the county needs more space,” Baughman said. “My problem becomes anytime the county needs more space, they need it in Stroudsburg because that’s where their base is. But when they do, there are unintended consequences, and that means the people in Stroudsburg are losing taxable property and in effect each of them has to make it up.”
The county took over the old Sears building and parking structure in 1989, converting it into an administration building and public parking deck.”
