Enbridge pipeline too close for comfort?
“Imagine an international oil pipeline was coming through your backyard, within 10 feet of your home and business where you are raising four kids – and if you refuse, the company can exercise its power of eminent domain. That is the situation Shawn and Kym Reese – who live on South 3rd Street in Niles – have found themselves in as the Enbridge Corporation moves forward with plans to replace 285 miles of pipeline from Indiana to Michigan and into Ontario, Canada.
Enbridge was responsible for what has been called the biggest, most expensive inland oil spill in U.S. history — it fouled about forty miles of the Kalamazoo River in Michigan in 2010. The company’s failure to deal adequately with cracks in its pipeline and its slow response to the rupture were likely the cause, the National Transportation Safety Board said.”
