Road project takes land in Cumberland

“A road project in Cumberland County could affect dozens of property owners who may lose some of their land.

The Camden Road expansion will include widening the road linking Fayetteville and Hope Mills from two to four lanes with a median and rebuilding a bridge.

Concerned residents planned to gather at a meeting Monday evening to learn more about the project and their rights.

Most homeowners losing their property have already signed on the dotted line. Some told ABC11 the state was fair, others said they didn’t like the deal but felt they had no choice.

Butch Suggs is one homeowner who said his year-long negotiation with the state for half an acre worked out fairly well, but they wouldn’t purchase one of his homes that sits in the middle of the expansion.

I’d love to relocate my sister. Her and her husband are deaf and the highway is a bit too close for comfort. I would love for them (the state) to put in a wall for their safety – safety first,” he said.”
