Greer business refuses to move, Port Authority to use eminent domain

“South Carolina State Ports Authority plans to open a $35 million inland port in Greer have hit a snag.

The authority says a company that operates a refrigerated warehouse on property needed for the site has refused to move.

The Ports Authority board met by telephone Tuesday and agreed to use eminent domain to condemn and demolish the building.

The warehouse business has been at its location for nearly 30 years and owners plan to fight, meaning the battle is likely headed to court, which could slow down construction. The Atlanta-based company signed a 40-year lease on the three-acre property. According to the state, there is still 11 years left on the lease.

The state values the lease at $900,000, and says it offered the company more than that to leave, but Nordic declined.
