Dighton wants to use eminent domain to protect land on Walker Street
“The Dighton Water District will be requesting the use of eminent domain authority on a parcel of land on Williams Street in order to protect the well field on Walker Street.
The Williams Street lot, currently zoned for industrial/commercial use, lies outside of the normal well field protection area, but Patrick Menges, chair of the Water District’s Board of Commissioners, noted that due to the contours of the land, the well fields could be threatened should a business move onto the Williams Street lot.
The land is assessed at about $600,000, according to Menges, and the district previously negotiated a purchase price of $450,000.
The sale, dependent upon the voter authorized land acquisition grant application and sale of the Water District’s Somerset Avenue property, eventually fell through.
The grant application, Menges said, was denied because the town lacks a master plan.”
