Eminent domain effort falls short
“Colorado Citizens for Property Rights (CCPR), the all-volunteer group that sponsored the proposed amendment to the Colorado constitution, notified the Colorado Secretary of State it did not have the required signatures in time to make the June 14 deadline.
Marsha Looper, who led the petition drive, said in a letter to volunteers that by signing the petitions, more than 30,000 Coloradans were saying “enough is enough.”
“They want government to stop condemning their homes and businesses just to put in another private development designed to generate increased tax revenues,” Looper wrote in her letter.
Jessica Corry, who represents the Front Range on CCPR board of directors, said in the release: “We were David going up against a Goliath represented by lobbyists paid through our tax dollars. We’re energized and we’ll be back to ensure that greed doesn’t bulldoze another Colorado home.”
The proposed constitutional amendment would have specifically prohibited government from condemning any private home, business or farm for “redevelopment.””
