Louisville to develop urban renewal plan for former Sam’s Club building
“After sitting vacant since 2010, the revitalization of the former Sam’s Club property at 550 S. McCaslin Blvd. is beginning to gain traction.
The Louisville City Council on Tuesday night directed the city staff to develop an urban renewal plan for the big-box site.
Mayor Bob Muckle said he believes a city effort through urban renewal is the last option to see the property used for retail purposes.
“If we want there to be a chance to have a large retail tenant for that building, this is our last chance at that option,” Muckle said. “Having an urban renewal plan and proceeding with this is the way that’s going to happen.”
Muckle said that if no retailer emerges for the property, the likelihood is that neighboring Albertsons and Kohl’s won’t stay in their current locations.
If retail doesn’t return to the former Sam’s Club site, “neither of them are long for Louisville retail. The Sam’s Club was the anchor,” Muckle said.”
