The Record: Pipeline PR problems

“THE COMPANY seeking to build an oil pipeline through North Jersey is doing its cause no good if it’s threatening to take legal action against homeowners who refuse to grant the company access to their property.

First, the company, Pilgrim Pipeline, may lack the legal authority to unilaterally access private property without the homeowners’ permission. More importantly, raising the specter of legal action is a heavy-handed attempt to intimidate and is not the way to win public support for the project.

Pilgrim’s proposal calls for construction of a pipeline to deliver crude oil from Albany, N.Y., to Linden. Preliminary plans call for the pipeline to cross Franklin Lakes, Mahwah, Oakland and other municipalities in North Jersey.

While this may prove to be a smart and beneficial plan for the energy needs of New Jersey, opposition already has surfaced and some towns, including Oakland, have passed resolutions against the proposal. The exact route of the proposed pipeline is not known, which leads us to an Oct. 17 letter from Pilgrim’s attorney to some homeowners.”
