Eminent Domain Possible, As City Seeks To Acquire Land For Stadium Project
“The city of Hartford could use eminent domain, as it tries to buy some of the land it needs to build a $350-million baseball stadium and development project.
The stadium needs to be finished by the start of the 2016 minor league baseball season.
Hartford Mayor Pedro Segarra says he has told city attorneys to use any avenues, including eminent domain, to obtain the land and keep the project moving forward on schedule.
“My understanding is that these properties were appraised, and we were paying well above appraisal value in order to acquire them, so the price should not be an issue,” Segarra said. “If there are other impediments those can be cured by eminent domain. At that point we would pay the appraisal value.”
In other words, the city could pay less than it had been prepared to shell out before eminent domain was put on the table.”
