Essex County wants cemetery back

“Essex County lawmakers have authorized using eminent domain to take back the old County Home and Infirmary cemetery in Essex.
It was sold by mistake in 1985 as part of the former county poor farm property on Route 22 in Essex’s Whallonsburg hamlet.
Supervisor Thomas Scozzafava (R-Moriah) said County Attorney Daniel Manning III should try to negotiate with property owner Ruth Morgan before using eminent domain to take the 2-acre cemetery.
“Have we exhausted all of our options to not have to go to eminent domain?” he asked. “Have we sat down and really discussed it with the owner?”
Manning said he sent Morgan a letter on Nov. 24, but hasn’t heard back yet.”
